It’s official.

Filipino NBA prospect Kai Sotto will not rejoin Team Ignite, according to NBA G League president Shareef Abdur-Rahim.

“NBA G League Ignite and international prospect Kai Sotto of the Philippines today announced the mutual decision that Sotto will not re-join Ignite,” said Abdur-Rahim in a statement on Tuesday evening (Philippine time).

The G League and Sotto’s camp mutually agreed not to let the 7-foot-3 Sotto enter the ongoing G League bubble season due to the strict health protocols he has to go through, which will eat too much time, and post risks in the bubble at the ESPN Wide World of Sports in Orlando, Florida.

“Kai and the team both understood the challenges for him to rejoin Ignite given the current international travel constraints, quarantine times and health and safety protocols,” added Abdur-Rahim.

“Kai will always be part of the extended Ignite family and we wish him continued success as he pursues his NBA dreams.”

On February 2, Sotto, 18, arrived in the Philippines in his bid to join Gilas Pilipinas in the third and final window of the FIBA Asia Cup Qualifiers, leaving Ignite just when the G League season was about to begin on February 10.

Unfortunately, the qualifiers got postponed as Qatar backed out from hosting the event initially slated on February 17 to 23.

With the new schedule of the qualifiers yet to be determined, Sotto returned to the States on February 14.

Rumors that Sotto’s G League stint is over has since swirled for more than a week before the G League finally made it official that Sotto won’t rejoin Ignite, indeed.
